TUNG CHUNG - SAMPANS
Page added: 2022-02-17
Tung Chung's claim to fame is the ruins of an old Chinese fortress, - still there - with guns - for protection of the Pearl River entrance in the old days.
And of course I have explored this historic relic from the past too, - but for now I have concentrated on the sampans outside Tung Chung - - - Some great pics - - -
Again pictures of the use of the yuloh oar - this fantastic oar - that seemed to be in use everywhere in those days - early seventies - -
But the Chinese invented much more for the seagoing people - and looooong time BEFORE the Europeans got a similar idea - - -
Just think about the technique by making watertight compartments, - and the stern hinged rudder - - -
Not even the Vikings had come upon that idea, but stubbornly continued to steer their boats with an oar - - -
Most important - however - must be the invention of the compass - the most important of all navigational instruments - - - and more - - -
And for me? I found it very lovely to see young, beautiful girls and small children navagate around with their sampans, - as if they have never done anything else in their life - - -
As if they were born with their famous yuloh oar in their hands - - -
These 2 pictures I consider GREAT - - -
They are photographed against the light - giving this nice contrast - and the upper photo was taken with a Kodachrome dia-positiv colour film, - while the lower picture is taken with a B&W negative film - and both turned out great - - -
Very good "feeling" in those two pics - - -
