                                        YAUMATEI TYPHOON SHELTER - 1972

PAGE ADDED:  2022-02-14

Next - a short series of pictures from the old Yaumatei Typhoon Shelter.

This is long gone history now.

Where the junks and sampans are seen floating in the water on these pictures, - you will now find dry land -, and another historical location in Hong Kong has disappeared forever, - only living on in old photographs.

The characteristic apartment blocks you see on the last two pictures are still there, - but not right at the waterfront like when they were built.

There is, - however -, a new Yaumatei Typhoon Shelter, but now further out at sea, because the old shelter was being reclaimed for city development.

This new typhoon shelter is now mainly filled by work- and cargo barges, and does not anymore serve as a floating city - - - -

Please enjoy! :-)

These two first photos on this page shows the same cargo junk, - and as you can tell, - a woman sits in the doorway into the cabin and doing some work, - while her children - a girl and a little boy - plays on deck - - -

On the last picture you also see the father - most likely the Master of the cargo junk.

He sits idle and just stare over the typhoon shelter - - -

I am sure that he is waiting for his next assignment, - bringing some cargo from "A" to "B" - so that he can feed his family - - -

Let's hope he soon get an order - - -

Take note opf this scenery from 1972 - - - -

The apartment blocks are just by the water - 1972 -, but if you visit the place today - 2022- the blocks are now far inland - - -

The old Yaumatei Typhoon shelter you see on the photo is now completely filled in - and has become dry land with city development, - high rises, - a modern highway road system along the new coastline further out to the right in the photo -

And nearest to the new shoreline, - you will now find a new Yaumatei Typhone Shelter - full of working barges and cargo junks - --

Amazing - , but Hong Kong is constantly growing - - -
