THAILAND - INTRO

Thailand is a popular tourist place, - which in general I consider to be a negative thing -, but like everywhere else there is a lot of possibilities to get away from the usual tourist glitter, and get quite a lot more of Thailand itself instead of just a distant, superficial glimpse!

There is a surprising diversity,- which constantly make you wonder-, and the Thai people are indeed hospitable and tolerant and gifted with a natural charm which normally leaves visitors with a good impression.

Therefore, - in my first chapter on Thailand -, I have decided only to concentrate on the people,- in particular the colorful minorities in the far north, like the Karen- and Meo people.

To meet the most interesting of them, we have to go away from the hassle and noise of Bangkok and Pattaya and venture into the jungle in the area near the Burmese- and Laotian borders,- also known as "The Opium Triangle".

And yes; - it does require some hiking on narrow, slippery foot paths, through dense, snake infected jungle, but you will be generously rewarded by meeting the tribes,- if the local opium war-lords leave you alone and don't suspect you to be an anti drug agent!

Please enjoy the people from the northern tribes - By the way-, the Thai architecture is fantastic - -

Just take a look here at a magnificent temple roof, with glazed tiles -
