                                    S/S "Clara Jebsen" of 1902

S/S "Clara Jebsen" - (Copy of an old post card I found in Antwerp)

Builders: S.A Chantier Naval Anversois, Hoboken, Antwerp

Year: 1902

Tonnage: 3000 dw. Length: 259,6 feet (79,13 meters) Breath: 36,6 feet (11,16 meters) Depth: 20,7 feet (6,30 meters)

Indicated horsepower: 900 ihp

Above picture is showing an early Jebsen owned steam ship, - the "Clara Jebsen" -, during fitting out at the building yard, - Chantier Naval Anversois -, on the Schelde in Hoboken, Antwerp, Belgium.

As mentioned above it is a scan of an old post card, and an investigation lead me to the referred conclusions.

The engine was a triple expansion steam engine from North Eastern Marine Engine Co., Wallsend/Tyne, and she had two boilers.

"Clara Jebsen" was registered under German flag, and served Rhederi M. Jebsen of Aabenraa until 1914, when she was sold to Don Steam Ship Co. of Manila and renamed S/S "Don Neil".

Later during her career she changed owners again and was renamed S/S "Tioga", - and later again she became S/S "Macaria" and finally she became Chinese under the name S/S "Pei Fu", - owned by North China Steam Ship Co. Ltd., Tientsin.

Under Chinese flag she finally ran aground at Tsunoshima in 1940 and got totally wrecked.

                                          - and here another Jebsen related post card - M/S "Emma Jebsen"

M/S "Emma Jebsen" (Copy of a post card from the Webmaster's collection.)

Here is another card, - this time most likely the newest Jebsen related post card -, showing the newest ship, - the "Emma Jebsen".

I do not know if it was a promotion card from the building yard, or if it was issued by the Jebsen Company - -

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now something completely different, - a menu card - - -

With only Chinese Cooks and Chief Stewards, we lived , - to put it mildly -, quite well onboard the Jebsen ships.

No need to deny that!

Here a menu card from M/S "Kaethe Jebsen", - dated May 11th. 1964.

Old menu card - - -

had a newer menu card from the seventies from M/S "Emma Jebsen", but have given it away to Aabenraa Museum, which has quite a fantastic maritime collection about the great maritime past of the city.

However, - I made a rather bad copy of this card before I gave it away for the benefit of mankind and maritime history, - and here on this copy, - as shown below -, you can see what we had for lunch at that Christmas way back in 1975 - - - -

It is quite obvious that Rhederi M. Jebsen related things take up quite a lot of space in the splendid maritime museum of Aabenraa - - -

And here "I" am exibited too - standing in the Jebsen room of the museum - in my Jebsen uniform - made by a tailor from Aabenraa for long time ago - and it is quite transgressive to see oneself exibited in a museum like that - surrounded by ship models and paintings - and memories from the Far East -  and I am not even dead yet!!!!!! :-)

How did my uniform end up there????

Well - it goes many, many years back where the Inspector of the museum on several occations gave me the feeling, that it would certainly be VERY well received, if I would consider to donate my genuine Jebsen uniform to the museum - - -

However - I always said NO!

There are many memories attached to that uniform, - and it would be impossible for me just to give it away - - -  That would feel like giving away a piece of myself - - - So NO it was - - -

Then back in the very begining of this century, - Kit Yu and I were sitting in our old sofa and drank tea and talked - and during that activity I suddenly suggested, that we actually should make a real propaganda photo of us, so that we had something to laugh about when we got old - - -

Kit Yu was in on the idea, - and suddenly she disappeared -, and a few minutes later she stepped into the room dressed in a traditional Chinese "cheongsam" of red silk and covered with gold embroideries - and so tight. that it was more tight than her skin, - and with a long slit up her thigh - - -

And I almost fell off the sofa - - -  I had no idea that she had a traditional Chinese dress like that , - and I felt totally knocked out by this sight - - -  She was stunningly beautiful - - - And she said, that she would use this dress for the photo session - - -

That gave me problems, because I am not exactly famous for being a well equipped dressman - and I totally do not care about clothes or fashion - but I could NOT look like a tramp on the photo- while Kit Yu looked like a Chinese princess - - - -

What to do?

Well - I thought about my uniform!  That would suit Kit Yu's red silk "cheongsam" VERY well, - and I pulled out my "antique" Jebsen uniform with all it's gold stripes with red bands inbetween, but it did absolutely NOT fit anymore - - - -

It fitted well in the seventies, - but now- 25 years later - I could not get myself into the pants, - and I could not button the uniform jacket - - -

So - maybe no propaganda photo afterall????

Yes, - because I had my American uniform, which I used at sea, - and that fitted, - but only problem was, that it had nothing to do with the China coast - - -

By then I decided - finally - to donate my old Jebsen uniform to Aabenraa Museum - and here "I" am - displayed in a great maritime museum -, and afterall - that's not so bad - is it????  :-) :-) :-)

But as I said earlier:  It really is quite transgressive, to see myself exibited in a museum - - -

Notice!

Those of you who knew - or know - my old web site will maybe remember a lot of historical pictures of "CLARA JEBSEN" and "JACOB JEBSEN", that does NOT appear in my new web site - the section about Rhederi M. Jebsen - - -

Reason is, that an old collegue and shipmate of mine wanted me to display some of his pics in my website - - -

Great!  It was great, historical stuff, and I added many of his pics, which without doubt has made many an old sailor happy - when experiencing their glorious past again - with their beloved ships.

However - my old collegue passed away - and one day I was approached by his widow, who demanded that I removed ALL of her late husbands pictures - - -

The problem was, that she accused ME to use her late husbands pictures commercially - and earned a lot of money on them - money that she considered should belong to her, since she had inheritated all her husbands pictures and the copyright to them.

I tried to calm her down, and told her, that of course I would NOT even dream about selling her late husbands pictures - even if somebody asked for a copy - - -  of course NOT!!!!

Furthermore I had a problem with my old website - - -  It is very old - and homemade - from long before readymade templates were available -, and due to it's age the programs needed to delete pics in it was not available anymore!  That's why I started a new - readymade website, that was very easy and fast to work with - - -

But NO - I had to remove her late husbands pictures, because she thought that I used them commersially, - and put the money in my own pocket - - -

That was a problem - because when the programs I needed did not exist anymore, - I could NOT add, correct - or delete anything - - problems, problems, problems - - -

Eventually I got contach with an expert in USA - from "Yahoo" - and he showed me a way - a sort of "backdoor" - by which I could delete the pictures - - -

And so I did, - and that's why my new website has a lot less about the Jebsen ships - compared to the old one - - -

What a pity, - but what can I do?????

The worst thing - however - was NOT the loss of my old collegues historical pictures, - but that I was accused of STEALING the pictures - and to make a PROFIT out of them - and to CHEAT the widow for what she considered belonging to her - - -

Just to make it clear to everybody:  I do NOT steal, - I do NOT lie - and I do NOT cheat - - -

None of those habits are in my DNA - and I would not even dream about it - - -

The code I live by does NOT contain lies, cheating and stealing -

However, - it does contain  TRUTH and LOVE - so those who have submitted wonderful pictures to me, do NOT have to worry a bit about my activities - - - - -
